One of the Ways to Keep Peatlands Wet

unri.ac.id Coordinator of the Riau University (Unri) Disaster Study Center, Dr Sigit Sutikno, explained that since the establishment of the Unri Disaster Study Center in 2014-2015 until now, he has conducted action research to resolve the case of forest and land fires (Karhutla) in Riau Province. .

This was conveyed by Sigit, Monday (16/9/2019) in the Kunto Darussalam meeting room on the second floor of the Rectorate Building of the Bina Widya Unri Campus during a meeting with a number of media crew. Sigit, said that Unri often coordinates with various institutions, including the Peatland Restoration Agency, BNPB, WWF, Civor, Kyoto University , and Yamaguchi University .

"The form of Unri's activities in resolving the Riau Province's Karhutla. First, prevention of peat drought based on research that peat ignites easily when dry, in principle we maintain how the peat remains wet, namely by blocking canals that we have done in Meranti, Sugai Tohor, and Tanjung Leban regencies," he said.

“We did the blocking of the canal, starting with research in accordance with the function of the university, namely blocking the canal in collaboration with community groups. "How do we do this activity together with the community through blocking canals, and thank God the land locations are not currently being burned."

“In addition, Unri is trying to increase the community's livelihood sources needed so as not to burn the land. Most importantly, we take care of the humidity of the peat so that it is wet so that anything can be planted so that it can grow to improve the economy of the surrounding community, "explained Sigit.
