Youth as the New Spirit of the Indonesian Nation

unri.ac.id Every November 10th, the Indonesian nation commemorates Heroes' Day to commemorate the Battle of Surabaya 73 years ago, the first physical war after the Indonesian nation declared its independence. Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Prof. Dr. Ir. Thamrin, MSc., while at the Bina Widya Unri Campus on Wednesday (14/11), invited the entire Unri academic community to strengthen the values ​​of heroism, deepen the love of the homeland and strengthen the spirit of devotion to the nation and state.

"Regarding this heroic spirit, it shouldn't be merely an ordinary occasion, but rather one steeped in meaning. Heroes' Day isn't just a historical event, let alone a mere procession during a Heroes' Day commemoration ceremony. The substance of each Heroes' Day commemoration should be able to explore and foster a new spirit in implementing heroic values ​​in everyday life," Thamrin said.

"The 2018 Heroes' Day theme, "The Spirit of a Hero in My Chest," embodies the inherent value of heroism within every human being. Therefore, anyone can be a hero; every Indonesian citizen, without exception, can take the initiative to dedicate themselves to something beneficial for the benefit of themselves, their environment, the nation, and the state," he said.

"Indonesia needs new heroic spirits that have dedicated and accomplished figures in their fields to advance this country, especially the need for young Indonesian figures as the next generation who have a spirit of patriotism, never give up, are disciplined, have character and master science," said Thamrin.

"This country needs young people who are strong in their identity, possess noble local character, are self-confident and sensitive to social issues. In addition, this country hopes for young people who have a global perspective, are able to collaborate for the progress of the nation and are able to utilize technological advances to make Indonesia a force to be reckoned with in competing and standing side by side with other countries, especially as this country faces the era of the industrial revolution 4.0," he concluded.
